E-fit issued following robbery in Andover
 Image

Police have today issued an E-fit image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with a robbery in Andover on Wednesday, August 18.

The incident occurred at the Borough Arms public house in Adelaide Road at around 10.40pm.

Two unknown men walked into the pub and demanded cash while a third man waited outside. The victim, a 41-year-old man, was punched to the face resulting in bruising and swelling.

Having stolen cash, the offenders left the pub via the front door and made off on foot in the direction of Vigo Park.

One offender was wearing a grey baseball cap, grey sports jacket and grey tracksuit trousers.

The other was about 6 feet tall and wearing a black baseball cap with a vibrant red colour on the underside of the peak, black top with a zip up the front and dark jeans.

Detective Constable Marie Greer said: “I would like to hear from anyone who thinks they may recognise the E-fit image or anyone with information about this incident.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact DC Marie Greer at Andover CID on 101. Alternatively you can call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Council unable to account for £141,000

Cllr Len Gates Test ValleyValley Borough Council was unable to account for £141,00 in the 2008/9 financial year.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Len Gates said "A loss of this size is worrying when the council is looking to cut costs and supply a more cost effective service. The Liberal Democrats have long advocated more transparency in local government and we will be investigating this matter further through the newly formed audit committee and with the council’s finance officers. I expect to see much tighter controls on, and full accountability for, all expenditure in the future," said Councillor Gates.

Officers are continuing to investigate the discrepancy.  Like many councils, Test Valley publishes its annual accounts and the expenditure is phenominal. Take a look at the budget book here. Unfortunately, the public needs to see the details of exactly what these staggering sums of money are being spent on if it is to know whether or not its council tax payments are beng well spent.  Add your comments here

Are you affected by the credit crunch or do you think it is just media hype? Have Andover house prices REALLY dropped? Had problems getting a mortgage?

How about this idea from one of our readers who wrote:

"I now get only 3% from my savings. Seeing that there are lots of local families struggling to get a mortgage because they can only afford 10% deposit, surely there is a way the council could let us lend money to these families and they pay us the interest. It would keep everything local, bypass the banks, get us a better rate of interest and help local home buyers. We thought it was a great idea. Would it be workable? Would the council do it? What do you think?
